American Optical WWII Pilot Goggles — Adjustable Bridge

American Optical goggles with separate metal eye housings joined by an adjustable bridge bearing a circular AO emblem. Padded brown edging and a woven strap complete the enclosing configuration. Wear to the metal finish is visible and contributes to the object’s aged appearance.

A different optical construction
Each lens is enclosed in its own housing, with padded edging where the assembly meets the face. The central connecting mechanism carries an AO emblem and permits adjustment between the housings. A woven strap replaces spectacle temples. The visible finish loss and aged materials should be read as part of the condition of this particular object. Its interest lies as much in the fastening and fitting system as in the lens shape.
Collector’s note
A study in functional optical design, with the bridge mechanism, close-fitting housings and strap doing the work usually assigned to spectacle temples. A specific aviation service history is not documented.
Condition & presentation
Visible finish loss, discolouration and surface wear to the metal housings and bridge. The padding and woven strap show age. Strap elasticity, fit and protective performance have not been tested. No case is included.
Restoration is carried out with intention by third-party specialists on an as-needed basis, preserving original features and markings as fully as possible. Individual condition notes describe the visible state and any specifically recorded changes.
